What is a MMS?
A MMS (maintenance management system) is a tool for planning, problem-solving, and decision-making that allows managers to best deploy human, physical, and financial resources to the organization's advantage.
Traditionally, maintenance organizations have been slow in adopting modern management principles, spending much of their time putting out "fires" rather than aggressively acting to prevent such occurrences. Not surprisingly, this approach places a heavy burden on the organization because maintenance operations often:
- employ the greatest number of people
- requires the greatest part of the agency tax dollar or budget
- has the greatest potential for maximizing efficiency and effectiveness when the correct management tools are applied
In today's economic climate many maintenance organizations are under pressure to establish service priorities and reduce consumption, while continuing to provide the same high quality parks, facilities, and programs. In this environment, innovative managers must seek ways to provide their services more efficiently and effectively.
